Spirit of Mugwort painting by Jackie Lewis
We have just finished our series of events, workshops and retreats for the first half of the year and sacred Mugwort has been either present or centre stage for them all! Her presence at our events brings a calmness and centredness to the energies in the room, allowing the teachings and practical sessions to flow as they are meant to. One quality of Mugwort is that she keeps energy moving, hence her practical applications in childbirth and women’s menstrual cycles.

It is always enjoyable and insightful to meet others at our events who are also working with Mugwort, to share and swap stories of our witch queen ally! A common theme has been the magical ways in which people have found Mugwort growing near where they live, often in places significant or surprising. Once we make the connection to Mugwort and the intention to work with her, as we do in our Magic of Mugwort workshops, then most people go on to discover her growing wild, even in London!
Another common theme we have found is amongst people using our Mugwort Blue Moon dreaming essence. For those who already lucid dream or work with their dreams this essence is too high vibration and these people do not need to work with it, in fact, they find it difficult to sleep. This essence has intentionally been created with additional dreaming stones to create a high vibrational situation so people who are wanting to lucid dream can have their first one. For those training to dream lucidly, having your first lucid dream is a major hurdle, our vibrational state (the amount of natural qi / prana in our energetic system) can be a major factor in achieving lucidity. The Blue Moon essence assists this, with your intention also of course. So if you are already well connected to your dreams and you want to sleep, don’t use this essence!

Overall we have observed the general effect on people’s lives that Mugwort has. By being able to communicate and receive healing gifts from a plant spirit our lives are opened back up to the magic we were told was not true as children. Synchronicities abound and inspirational insights offer a sense of wonder and the reassurance that we can never be truly alone in this world. The realm of nature spirits is just as alive as our own conventional reality and we can be a part of that magic once again.

Mugwort is most famously known as the dreaming herb for it’s capacity to help us remember them, help us have more vivid ones and to get lucid within them.

The potential for healing and transformation contained within the dream is vast and thanks to Mugwort’s active ingredient (thujone), she is a strong ally in helping us access that potential.

Lucid dreaming is the state of being consciously aware that you are dreaming while you are in the dream itself. There are many great books (see below for recommendations) on the subject so I do not need to go into the whys and hows here, it is enough to understand that when you are lucid within the dream you are accessing a deep level of your consciousness that is usually not accessible, unless you are an adept meditator or work with entheogens.

This is the realm where our memories and suppressed emotions live and where our shadow side resides. You can see that actually being conscious in this space and learning to navigate it will not only help understand all those shadow elements that Dr Jung stated need reintegrating for us to become whole again, but will profoundly change your perspective on life and bring your thought processes more in alignment with reality rather than being highly conditioned by biased perspectives and experiences. This is why Mugwort is the perfect ally for us here, her principle vibration is of re-alignment.

Not only does Mugwort bring harmony and clarity into situations in our waking state that need re-balancing but she brings us into the present, centering us and bringing us focus. These are the essential ingredients for lucid dreaming, if we are not present in our waking state, then we will not be present in the dream either. It is therefore advised to take a holistic approach when working with Mugwort and consume it during the day aswell as at night.

For those fortunate souls who already lucid dream then Mugwort will help you become more consistent, but for the lucidly-challenged section of society then this plant will boost your dream memory capacity and make them more vivid. If you are learning to lucid dream this is an excellent ally! And so to maximise Mugwort’s potentiality in the dream state I employ a three-fold approach. Firstly, it is essential to build up a strong connection and relationship with the plant. Drinking Mugwort tea and taking an essence every day is ideal for building up that connection. And consistency, not quantity of the plant, is the key here.

Secondly, I employ a good lucid dream technique (again, many techniques are contained in any good lucid dream book) I use the Wake Back To Bed method. This involves setting your alarm for 4am, affirmations as you fall asleep, getting up at 4am for 10-15 mins, then going back to sleep with the intention of becoming lucid. I slip in extra essence drops here before I fall back to sleep to allow the vibration of Mugwort to be fully present as I drop off.

This is where the magic happens. That presence of mind that we have cultivated in the waking state is held in the vibration of mugwort and transferred to the dream state. The level of your lucidity will differ from dream to dream but Mugwort helps to increase it and make the experience more visceral. From here we can journey wherever we wish (it's always good to have a plan!) and confront whatever shadow aspect arises. This is the imaginal realm and one that we have long forgotten exists.

Thirdly, don’t forget to write your dream down as soon as you wake up. This is an important part of any dream work for many reasons that will become apparent as you progress, but for now it is enough to know that it helps you remember more dreams and allows you to analyse the ones you have had.

This three-step approach to dream work, integrating Mugwort as your ally, will set you on the path to deep transformation and healing.

Before the great witch hunt throughout Europe from the 14th to 16th centuries, which almost wiped out our vast and ancient plant lore, Mugwort was widely used for a variety of purposes.  It was also known as Motherwort, the mother of all herbs and as the ‘first herb’ due to it’s highly effective and beneficial medicinal and magical properties. Mugwort was revered not only for it’s power of cleansing and scrying but ironically for it’s strength in protection against black magic. People would hang a bunch of Mugwort at their door to prevent harmful spirits entering and summon the spirit of the Mugwort to help in the clearing of any negative energies, either in the home or attached to someone. But the reality of the Mugwort world is much wider and has deeper effects on our life than is commonly reported in herb and magic books.

The spirit of Artemesia Vulgaris is a powerful white witch, a goddess, a Boddhisattva, whatever we wish to label her, she is a powerful being able to re-align the etheric threads of the elements and of matter for the greater good. She is one of the main plants coming forward at this time in history again to help combat the prevalent malevolent forces in the world. We only have to tune in to the mainstream media to understand the importance of Mugwort’s work in our world and how imperative it is for her white magic to come forth once again.

The fundamental work of Mugwort is of re-alignment. She brings balance into situations and into our psyche, which can be a brutal awakening sometimes, but one which you will understand is needed in your life. She makes us more present and cuts through our delusions, hence her reputation as a dreaming herb, making us more present in the dream. But being conscious in the dream is a reflection of how conscious we are in our waking state and so she works on all levels of consciousness. (More on Mugwort for lucid dreaming in my next blog).

By working with Mugwort we can help bring humanity back into alignment with it’s true nature, we can remember how to really live from the heart and rediscover guardianship of our sacred planet. By drinking Mugwort tea, taking Mugwort essence or smoking it we are not only helping to bring balance into areas of our life but into the collective also. Everything is interconnected in profound ways, so any healing we do for ourselves we do for Gaia.

As my teacher, Pam Montgomery told me, ‘’if you work with only one plant, make it Mugwort.’’
